Emissions Reductions Bill Approved by Committee

HB 1144, a bill that modifies state greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, moving from 25 percent below 1990 levels to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2035, and from 50 percent below 1990 levels to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050, was approved by the House Appropriations Committee. The significance of this bill is that it would enhance Washington State commitments under a law passed in 2008, and it responds to a court case brought by children under Nature’s Trust auspices. If enacted, it would require major efforts such as those envisioned by the carbon tax bill.
